Florence, Oregon and Pass Christian, Mississippi

The Florence Katrina Relief Fund was founded on September 9th, 2005, by Kelly Riggs, Tiffany Rogato and an Anonymous Donor, for the residents of Florence, Oregon to "Make a Difference" in the lives of residents in a city, of similar size, damaged by Hurricane Katrina August 2005. The chosen “Sister City”, adopted by The Florence Katrina Relief Fund, on September 17th, 2005, was Pass Christian (pronounced Christ—ee—ANN), Mississippi. This fund was organized solely from donations. Administration costs were donated by Kelly Riggs and Tiffany Rogato. Absolutely no advertising costs, supplies, etc., etc., etc………..came from funds collected.

Florence, Oregon was the second named sister city of Pass Christian. The first was Toledo, Ohio and their fundraising efforts are just getting started. The link to their project is here. Housing Crisis in Mississippi

This is Mississippi district 11 (West of Biloxi)

"In Mississippi the situation is getting worse, not better, and here is one reason why. More than 10,000 people, right now, are in shelters. The Red Cross has 122 shelters, many of those are in schools, and the State wants to clear out those schools. They're hoping to get the kids back to school early in October. So there is a real housing crisis going on here. In addition, the State is estimating more than 100,000 people from this State are staying either with friends, family or in hotels. And keep in mind that a lot of the hotels, also, were destroyed. The governor has arranged for about 2,000 mobile homes and trailers, they're hoping to get 10,000 into the state. That, still, will not solve the problem. The State is turning to The Homeland Security Department for help, here. Part of the reason we've got such a crisis, of course, is the absolute devastation small towns, just west of here, where almost everything is completely decimated. Long Beach, Pass Christian (pronounced: Christ-ee-ANN), and other small towns where 70% of the homes are estimated to be uninhabitable, Bay St. Louis and Waveland. These four towns little towns, with 5,000, 6,000, 7,000 people living in each, are almost completely destroyed. It is very, very sad and it is going to take a very, very long time to rebuild. This state is having a huge housing crisis right now.
