How To - Dial-Up Configuration for Windows 2000

This document describes how to configure a PPP client for Windows 2000. Once completed, you will be able to connect to OregonFAST.net from a remote location using a modem and a regular telephone line.

A Note About Connection Rates

Our dial-up pool supports 56K modems. However, 56K is a theoretical connection rate. Three things will affect your actual connection rate: The speed and configuration of your modem, the standards it supports, and the quality of your phone lines. In practice, the connection rate is somewhat slower. You may want to lower the connection speed of your 56K modem for more reliable connections.

Note: Make sure you Login to your computer as ADMINISTRATOR or equivalent. If you do not do so, you may not be able to even see or configure Dial-up Networking.

STEP 1: Open Network and Dial-up Connections

To select Network and Dial-up Connections from the Start menu:

  • Start.
  • Programs.
  • Accessories.
  • Communications.
  • Network and Dial-up Connections.

If you do not see the Network and Dial-up Connections icon, you can alternatively select:

  • Start.
  • Programs.
  • Settings.
  • Control Panel.
  • Network and Dial-up Connections.

STEP 2: Make a New Connection

  • Click the Make New Connection icon.

Depending on whether or not you have previously setup any other Dial-up Networking sessions, you may get this window:

  • Enter your area code.
  • Select tone or pulse dialing.
  • Click OK when done.

The following window allows you to edit dialing rules, however this is typically not needed.

  • Click OK to close this window.

STEP 3: Network/Internet Connection Wizard

The Network/Internet Connection Wizard will start to assist you with your configuration.

  • Click Next.

  • Click Dial-up to the Internet.
  • Click Next.

Again, depending on whether or not you have setup previous Dial-up Networking sessions, you may see the following screen:

What you do next depends on your particular setup. These instructions assume that you have no other Internet Service Provider setup (such as America Online).

  • Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN).
  • Click OK.

You should now see a screen like the one below:

  • Click Next.

If you have recently installed your modem and have not installed drivers for it yet, you will see this Add/Remove Hardware Wizard screen:

The steps you take to configure your modem if necessary are based on your particular setup, and the recommendation of your modem manufacturer. Some manufacturers may have you select 'Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list' and then use drivers on a disk that came with the modem. Some may have you simply let Windows detect your modem and install drivers that way. Since these steps are highly dependent on your hardware configuration, the remaining instructions will assume that you have properly configured your modem for use.

STEP 4: Internet account configuration

Assuming your modem has been properly configured, you will now see the following screen that will start guiding you through the final configuration steps:

  • Enter your local OregonFAST.net access phone number (see local access numbers) in the Telephone Number field.
  • Click Next.

  • Type your username and password in the fields as shown above.
  • Click Next.

  • Enter OregonFAST.net in the Connection Name field as shown above.
  • Click Next.

  • Click No.
  • Click Next.

If all goes well, you should see the screen below, indicating that your dial-up connection configuration was successfully completed.

  • Click Finish.

STEP 5: Testing your Dial-up Networking Account

  • To verify the dial-up configuration, open Internet Explorer.

  • When you see the window above, verify that your username is correct. If not, enter your correct user name in the User name field.
  • Enter your password in the Password field and check Save Password.

You can now choose to have your computer save your password, but keep in mind that this will allow anyone to automatically use your account without being challenged. You will also have to update your password manually if you ever change your password. It will not update automatically.

  • Click Dial to start the dialing process.

Your computer will now try to establish a connection with our modem pool. If you connect successfully, you will see the following screen:

You will also see another icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen (the system tray):

When you want to disconnect from the our modem pool, you can double click on the two computers icon in the lower right-hand corner. You will then see a screen like:

Click Disconnect to disconnect from us.
